Dear Students,
With help from several teachers and librarians, I've been working on orders of books for our school. This has me thinking about my favorite children's books. The first one that comes to my mind is Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. Max has such great adventures in this book. I love the line that says, "Let the wild rumpus start!" A wild rumpus sounds like fun! I also loved reading this book to my own kids when they were little.

The next book that came to my mind is Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein. This book is a collection of poetry. I think my love of poetry started because of this book. I learned that poems can be long or short or serious or silly.
I also thought of some great silly books. My son Keaton loved to read Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed, and we always made funny faces and hand motions while reading it. His all-time favorite book when he first started to read was called I Stink! It's about a super cool trash truck and all the awesome things he does while people are sleeping. We used funny voices when we read it.
An author named Jack Prelutsky came to my school when I was in about third grade, and I got a signed copy of his book called Rolling Harvey Down the Hill. That was probably the first book that I saw as a treasure. It was so exciting to me that the person who wrote the book had signed my book!
I have a few other books now that are treasures. I keep one of the most special ones on the bookshelf in my office. My very favorite teacher, Mrs. Place, gave it to me when I finished eighth grade. It's a book of poems about following your dreams, and Mrs. Place wrote a kind note to me inside the front cover. This book always reminds me of Mrs. Place and all of the teachers who taught me that I could do anything with hard work. You can see it's kind of worn, but it's still a great treasure.
I remember many great chapter books, too. I loved to read Charlotte's Web and all of the books in the Chronicles of Narnia series. I've heard of many chapters books for 3rd and 4th graders that I haven't read, and I hope I can read lots of them and talk about them with you. Talking about books is almost as much fun as reading them!
I can't wait to hear all about your favorite books. Lots of people are working to make sure you have great books in your classrooms and library at Spring Creek. Maybe we can all find some new favorites together!
