Dear Students,
I hope you all had a great spring break! I started a new sewing project and learned how to go geocaching. Geocaching is like treasure hunting, and there are many geocaches to find in our local parks and neighborhoods. My two sons and I searched for about six different geocaches, but we only found one. Sometimes it was hard to keep searching even though we failed over and over again, but when we finally found one we were so excited! We learned that each of us had a strength that we could use in our searches. My son Tucker is very good at looking for the tiny details that lead us to the treasure, and my son Keaton is very good at reading the compass and sending us in the right direction. My job was to keep us together and safe as we searched. We had such a fun time that I'm sure we will go geocaching again. I wanted to share a photo of the one we found because we were so happy that our perseverance paid off!

During spring break I read an article about the most beautiful waterfalls in the United States. One is called Waterfalls of Havasupai and is part of the Grand Canyon. I remembered that some people take trips during spring break and thought about how fun it would be to visit waterfalls. I didn't travel during the break, but I knew that with my imagination I could take a trip anywhere I wanted. I decided to go to a place I've never been and take Casey along.
Something you may not know about me is that I am very afraid of high places. Even when I know I'm safe I sometimes feel scared on tall bridges or roller coasters that go up very high. The Grand Canyon is a place with many high cliffs, but in my imagination it wasn't scary at all!
The Grand Canyon is in Arizona. Looking out over the canyon was beautiful! It seemed like I could see for miles and miles! I read more about the Grand Canyon, and I learned that it is 277 miles long. At it's widest point, it's 18 miles from one side to the other, and at it's narrowest point the distance from one side to the other is four miles.

The Colorado River runs through the bottom of the Grand Canyon. On our visit, Casey and I walked across a bridge from one side of the river to another. Do you remember that I'm afraid of heights? Well, I was very happy that this was an imaginary trip because this bridge is long and high above the water!
I don't think Casey was scared at all. I guess birds are never afraid of heights because they can fly. I imagined that while I walked across the bridge carefully holding on to the rails, Casey flew and fluttered all around me, reminding me to be brave.

We also found many caves and other openings in the rock. Casey was able to explore more than I could because he was small enough to fit through almost every opening. I wonder if animals live in these caves. I learned that you can camp overnight in the canyon. Maybe people camp out in the caves so they don't have to carry tents on the long hike to the bottom. I'll have to read about that to find out.
After our long day of hiking and learning about the Grand Canyon, Casey and I rested on a trail near the top. There was a fantastic view, and the weather was just perfect. I enjoyed soaking up the sun, and Casey flew to the very highest rock so he could see even farther!
If you want to see more of the Grand Canyon, you can watch the video linked below.
Even though I didn't get to travel to a far away place on Spring Break, I read about the Grand Canyon, looked at pictures, and used my imagination to take a trip. This is one of the reasons I love reading so much. When you read, you can visit the whole world, even outer space! I hope you'll find a great book and take a trip, too!
